Most deck cost figures on the internet are a national average per square foot. That number is almost useless: it blends a ground-level pine deck in Alabama with an elevated ipe deck in Marin, and it will be wrong for you in a direction you cannot predict.
These calculators build a cost up from real quantities instead — the boards, the framing, the concrete, the hardware — then apply separate regional multipliers for materials and for labor, because lumber is close to a national commodity and labor is emphatically not.
Every cost page here also answers the question underneath the question: whether to do it yourself. That section is written honestly, including the parts that argue against DIY — skill, tools, permits, time and liability are real costs even when they do not appear on an invoice.
