The same deck is $96 of fasteners in pressure-treated pine and $330 in cedar. Not because cedar needs more screws — it needs exactly the same 744 — but because the tannins in cedar corrode coated steel and streak the board black around every head, so the fasteners have to be stainless.
744 is the count; 2 5 lb boxes is the order, with 156 screws left over. And 744 is a number for this board on these joists: a 1" board takes a 2 ½" screw and a 1 ½" board takes a 3" one, because the length is board thickness plus the depth the screw has to reach into the joist, taken up to a length the rack actually stocks.

A screw count is not a screw order
Nobody sells you 744 screws. They sell you a box with a weight on it, and what you have to know is how many of those to carry to the till. This deck takes 2 of the coated deck screws, 5 lb box at $96 on our survey prices, which are estimates rather than quotes.
That leaves 156 screws over, and the calculator says so rather than rounding past it. The smaller box is the alternative: 9 of the coated deck screws, 1 lb box leaves only 66 spare, and costs $16.50 more. Which of those is the better buy is a decision about your next deck, not this one, so the calculator shows both and picks neither for you.
Two things about box counts are worth knowing before you trust one. The first is that our figure is a survey estimate, and the number in a box moves with the screw — a longer screw weighs more, so a box of them holds fewer, and we hold no count per length. The second is the clip box, which is sold by the area it covers rather than by what is in it. On this deck the coverage on the label says 2 boxes and the clip count says 3, because that coverage figure assumes a board width and a joist spacing that may not be yours. Buy against the count.
How long the screws have to be
Length is not a property of decking, it is a consequence. The screw has to pass through the board and still reach far enough into the joist to hold, so the length you need is the board thickness plus that depth, rounded up to something the rack sells.
On this deck that is 1" of board plus 1 ½" of penetration — 2 ½", which becomes a 2 ½" screw. Put a 1 ½" board on the same frame and it becomes 3". That 1 ½" is trade practice rather than a code limit, and it is the figure the whole calculation turns on.
Gauge is the other half and it is not interchangeable with length. This board takes #9: a thicker shank splits a thin board and a thinner one snaps driving into dense timber. Buy the length and the gauge together rather than picking a length off a shelf and hoping.
The timber decides the metal
Three materials, three different reasons the fastener has to change.
Pressure-treated pine. The chemistry that stops it rotting attacks plain steel, and the coating is the only thing between the two — so the screw has to be rated for treated lumber. An uncoated screw in a treated deck is a rust stain within a season.
Cedar, redwood and ipe. These carry tannins, and tannins corrode coated steel and bleed black around every head. Stainless is the answer, and it is not a small premium: the same 744 fasteners are $96 coated and $330 stainless on our survey prices, which are estimates rather than quotes. Composite. A face screw for composite has a reverse thread under the head, to pull the mushroom of material that lifts around it back down flat.
None of this is a preference. Put the wrong metal in the wrong timber and the deck tells you inside a year.
Face screws or hidden clips
Clips change the arithmetic rather than scaling it. A face screw goes in twice at every crossing; a clip goes in once, seated in a groove milled down the board edge. So this deck is 372 clips where it is 744 screws — and $276 where it is $96, on survey prices rather than quotes.
What that buys is a deck surface with nothing visible in it, and a side gap set by the clip rather than by your eye. What it costs beyond the money is time: every board is offered up against a clip instead of dropped and screwed, and a damaged board in the middle of a run is harder to get back out. We hold no hours for either method, so the calculator does not put a number on that.
Clips need a grooved board, and grooved is something you buy. A 5/4 × 6 is not sold grooved as a matter of course; composite and ipe commonly are. The calculator offers clips only for the materials our data covers them for, and leaves the option off entirely for the rest rather than returning a number that would not work in your yard. Check the boards you are actually ordering.
Where the count comes from
Crossings, not square feet. 26 rows over 13 joists is 338 places a board meets a joist. Two screws at each of those is 676, and where a row is made from two boards the joint takes double because each board end gets its own pair.
A per-square-foot rate cannot survive that. It assumes a board width and a joist spacing, and both are inputs. Move this deck's joists from 16 in to 12 in and the count goes from 744 to 973 on the same square footage. That is why the calculator asks for the frame.
On top of the crossings goes 10% for the screws dropped, stripped and snapped. That allowance is inside the count here, and the deck lumber calculator deliberately keeps its miscut allowance outside the subtotal. Both are right, for the same reason read two ways: boards are bought one at a time and each one is a decision, so an allowance you do not use is waste you paid for — while screws are bought by the box, so an allowance costs nothing extra unless it tips you into another box.
On this deck it does not tip: 676 screws and 744 both come to 2 boxes. On a 10 × 12 ft deck it does — 416 bare is 1 box, 458 with the allowance is 2 — and the panel above is the thing that will tell you, because it recalculates when you change the deck.
What this calculator will not tell you
- How to fasten the ledger to the house. Not a pattern, not a spacing, not a count. It is the connection that fails all at once rather than gradually, and the schedule that governs it belongs to AWC DCA 6, which is free to download. Take it there and to your building department.
- Structural connectors. Hangers, post caps and bases are counted per framing member rather than per crossing, and the deck material calculator handles them inside the whole-build list.
- What a particular clip system needs. Groove profiles and starter clips differ between products, and we name no brands.
The board and joist counts here come from the same function the deck calculator and the deck lumber calculator use, over the same 16 × 12 ft (4.9 × 3.7 m) deck — so the three pages cannot describe different decks, and the build fails if they ever do.
