The short version

Every calculation on this site happens in your browser. What you type into a calculator — your deck dimensions, your material choice, your ZIP code — is never sent to us and never leaves your device. We could not look at it if we wanted to.

What is switched on right now

• Analytics: on, via Google Analytics. It sets cookies and assigns your browser a random identifier so repeat visits can be counted; see the automatic-collection section below for what that means.
• Advertising: off. No ad network is loaded and no ad cookies are set.
• Email capture: off. There is nowhere on this site to give us an email address.
• Third-party lead services: off. We do not sell or share leads, and there are no contractor-matching forms.
• Cookies: set by Google Analytics for measurement, and by nothing else. We set none of our own.

This list is generated from the site's own configuration when the page is built, so it cannot drift out of date while a feature is quietly turned on.

Personal information

We collect personal information in exactly one circumstance: you email us. In that case we have your email address and whatever you chose to put in the message. We use it to reply to you and for nothing else. We do not add you to a mailing list, and we do not pass it on.

If email capture is enabled in future, giving an email address will remain entirely optional and will always come after a complete result. Results on this site are never gated behind personal information, and that is not a policy we intend to revisit.

Information collected automatically

This site is served by Vercel, our hosting provider. Like any web host, Vercel processes technical request data — IP address, browser type, requested URL, timestamp — in order to deliver the page and to protect the service from abuse. This happens at the infrastructure level for every website on the internet, and we do not have access to it as an analytics product.

We use Google Analytics to see how the site is used. It loads a script from Google on every page, sets cookies in your browser, assigns it a random identifier so that a return visit counts as a return rather than a new person, and sends Google the pages you view, roughly where you are, and what device and browser you are using. Google processes that data on our behalf under its own terms; we see aggregate reports — which calculators get used, where people stop, whether a page is broken — not who you are, and we do not add your name, email or anything you type into a calculator to it. If you would rather not be counted, Google publishes a browser add-on that blocks its analytics, and most content blockers do the same.

Third parties

We do not sell personal information. We do not share it with data brokers. We do not operate a contractor-matching service. Google receives the analytics data described above as our processor; how Google handles it is set out in its own privacy policy.

If and when advertising or third-party services are introduced, they will be disclosed here before they go live, they will be visibly advertising rather than dressed up as a recommendation, and calculator results will not change based on who is paying. Any such partner will be named on this page, along with a link to their own privacy policy.

Children

This site is a construction reference for adults. It is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13.

Your rights

Depending on where you live — California, Colorado, Virginia, the EU and others — you may have the right to ask what personal information an operator holds about you, to have it corrected, or to have it deleted.

In practice, unless you have emailed us, we hold nothing about you. If you have, email contact@deckcalculators.com and we will delete the correspondence on request.

Changes

If this policy changes materially — particularly if we enable analytics, advertising, or any form of data collection — the date at the top of this page changes and the relevant section is rewritten before the feature goes live, not after.
