What you are getting

DeckCalculators.com provides free estimating tools and reference information for building, finishing, costing and repairing wood decks in the United States. Using the site means accepting these terms.

Estimates, not engineering

This is the part that matters, so it is not buried at the bottom.

Every result this site produces is an estimate. The structural figures are derived from published prescriptive residential deck guidance, which is a set of pre-worked conservative cases — not a design produced for your deck, your soil, your climate, or your intended use.

A calculator on a website has no way to know your soil bearing capacity, your local frost depth, your ground snow load, the condition of the wall you are attaching to, the grade of the lumber your yard sold you, or whether you are planning to put a hot tub on it. Any of those can change the correct answer completely.

You must verify every structural result against your local building code and permit requirements before building. For final sizing, consult a licensed engineer or your building official. Where a deck falls outside prescriptive guidance — heavy fixed loads, unusual geometry, high snow or wind exposure — it requires engineered design, and no calculator on this site or any other is a substitute for it.

Nothing on this site creates a professional relationship between you and us, and none of it is professional engineering, architectural, or legal advice.

Prices

Cost figures are national planning estimates from a periodic retail survey, adjusted by regional multipliers. Every priced figure carries the date it was last checked. Lumber prices in particular move fast and can move a long way. These are not quotes, they are not offers, and they do not bind any supplier or contractor.

No warranty

The site is provided as is. We work hard to be accurate and we correct errors when they are pointed out, but we do not warrant that any figure here is correct, current, or fit for your particular project. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we disclaim liability for any loss, damage, injury, cost overrun, failed inspection or rework arising from use of this site.

You are responsible for the deck you build. That is not us avoiding responsibility; it is a description of how construction works.

Using the content

Use the calculators for anything you like, personal or commercial. Print the results, take them to the lumberyard, hand them to your contractor.

Do not copy the site's written content, data tables, or code wholesale for republication, and do not scrape it at volume. If you want to cite a figure, cite it and link to the page — we will not object, and a link is more useful to your readers than a copy anyway.

Code and standards documents referenced on this site belong to their publishers. We store threshold values with attribution and render them as calculator output; we do not reproduce their tables, and neither should you.

We link to codes, standards bodies, and technical references. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for their content or their privacy practices.

Changes

These terms may change. The date at the top will change with them. Continuing to use the site after a change means accepting the revised terms.
