Deck Finishing Calculators

Wood decks need finishing, and finishing is where most estimates go wrong. Coverage varies more by product type and wood porosity than by anything printed on the can — these tools account for both.

Finishing is where wood decks are won or lost. The build happens once; the cleaning and recoating happens every two to four years for the life of the deck, and it is the single biggest reason a pine deck either lasts twenty-five years or looks tired at eight.

It is also where estimates go wrong most reliably. The coverage figure on the can assumes smooth wood in good condition. A weathered, grey, never-sealed deck drinks about a third more than that, and rough-sawn boards more again — which is how people end up three-quarters of the way across a deck with an empty tin and a colour they cannot exactly match.

These calculators account for product type, surface condition, species and coat count, and they count the railings, balusters and stairs that most estimates quietly leave out.
